Don't Eat the Pepper!

I will tell you one thing about me that many of my closest friends may not know. It isn't everyday that I wake up craving Chinese food. The other day, I woke up with the birds (the birds that haven't left us for warmer pastures) and I was craving the classic General Tso's Chicken combo with pork fried rice.

The only problem with Chinese food is you need to take the time and research the best places in the area. From my experience, there are not many Chinese restaurants in the Capital Region that have the experience and the skill to make a great General Tso's Chicken. I have had several poor Chinese meals in my day and I was not about to ruin my craving by ordering from a satisfactory restaurant.

After several hours of research and focus groups with my friends and family, we finally found a consensus of where we were going to order our dinner. We decided on Spring Garden on 2nd Ave in Troy.

As expected, I ordered the General Tso's with a shrimp egg roll. You must have an egg roll!

Let me tell you! It was pretty delicious, except when i accidentally ingested one of the spicy chili peppers... such a deep burn. A special note to everyone who will eat General Tso's, DO NOT EAT THE PEPPERS!

The overall experience of my meal was good. I enjoyed the meal and I will definitely go back. However, I haven't really found that one place where I can call my "go-to" Chinese restaurant.

I am thinking about trying something new for December. I want you, my followers to pick the place for me. What are some of your favorite restaurants that I should visit and blog about?

  1. I agree with your choice of SPRING GARDENS but, for my money, I still prefer the PLUM BLOSSOM. Just my view.

  2. If you are willing to pay more for a much-loved menu item, why not try Ala Shanghai in Latham?

  3. You may also want to try some of the new start up companies in the area. One is Zullo! Cookies and Milk. They are a gourmet chocolate chip cookie company. Their website is zullocookiesandmilk.com and they currently rent commercial kitchen space and deliver their cookies right out of the oven. They also donate 10% of their profits to breast cancer research. You wont believe how amazing their cookies are !

  5. Just don't comment of Burke's South End Tavern, as it is slowly dying its final spiral of its demise. We went there recently and the joint had run out of French fries, with the owners wife counting scallops and checking all the orders going out of the kitchen, along with the scam job by Lumpy, the missing Moonie the Mooch, with his deep pockets, it is no wonder that the joint is going down the drain. Just let Olie run the daily operation and it will survive.

  6. THANK GOD that the MOONIE is out of there! With his own self established profit sharing business, then his short stint at the PAC, where he must have been caught with his hand in the cookie jar again, along with missing beer from both of these places, he is now where he belongs, in a state prison, however, he is on the wrong side of the bars. I agree that Olie should take over the Tavern, he knows the place, the menu and the clientelle. Now would be a great time for Restaurant Impossible to come in and do a makeover on the South End Tavern. Just boot Lumpy to the curb, after his burn results after a phsical confrontation with Alex. BYE, BYE, LUMPY, DON'T LET THE DOOR HIT YOU WHERE THE GOOD LORD SPLIT YOU.

  7. Hi Joe,
The Hibachi restaurant that seems to attract repeat customers and good feedback is Hiro's on Central Ave. in Albany. Check out the menu online. Happy Holidays to you!
